Nigerian Islamist fighters kill 7 foreigners

RADICAL Islamic fighters killed seven foreign hostages in Nigeria, European diplomats have said, making it the worst such kidnapping violence in decades for a country beset by extremist guerrilla attacks.
Nigeria's police, military, domestic spy service and presidency remained silent over the killings of the construction company workers, kidnapped on February 16 from northern Bauchi state. The government's silence only led to more questions about the nation's continued inability to halt attacks that have seen hundreds killed in shootings, church bombings and an attack on the United Nations.
The latest victims were four Lebanese and one citizen apiece from Britain, Greece and Italy.
Britain and Italy said all seven of those taken from the Setraco construction company compound had died at the hands of Ansaru, a previously little-known splinter group of the Islamic sect Boko Haram. Greece also confirmed one of its citizens was killed, while Lebanese authorities didn't immediately comment.
"It's an atrocious act of terrorism, against which the Italian government expresses its firmest condemnation, and which has no explanation," a statement from Italy's foreign ministry read. Italy also denied a claim by Ansaru that the hostages were killed before or during a military operation by Nigerian and British forces, saying there was "no military intervention aimed at freeing the hostages."
Italian Premier Mario Monti identified the slain Italian hostage as Silvano Trevisan and promised Rome would use "every effort" to stop the killers. British Foreign Secretary William Hague called the killings "an act of cold-blooded murder" and identified the UK victim as Brendan Vaughan.
A statement from Greece's foreign ministry said authorities had already informed the hostage's family. "We note that the terrorists never communicated or formulated demands to release the hostages," the statement read, which also denied any military raid took place.
Ansaru issued a short statement on Saturday saying its fighters kidnapped the foreigners from the construction company's camp at Jama'are, a town 200km north of Bauchi, the capital of Bauchi state. In the attack, gunmen first assaulted a local prison and burned police trucks, authorities said. Then the attackers blew up a back fence at the construction company's compound and took over, killing a guard in the process, witnesses and police said.
Local officials in Nigeria initially identified one of the hostages as a Filipino, something the Philippines government later denied.
The gunmen appeared to be organised and knew who they wanted to target, leaving the Nigerian household staff at the residence unharmed, while quickly abducting the foreigners, a witness said.
In an online statement on Saturday claiming the killings, Ansaru said it killed the hostages in part because of local Nigerian journalists reporting on the arrival of British military aircraft to Bauchi. However, Ansaru's statement cited local news articles that instead said the airplanes were spotted at the international airport in Abuja, the nation's central capital 290km southwest.
The British Defence Ministry said the planes it flew to Abuja ferried Nigerian troops and equipment to Bamako, Mali. Nigerian soldiers have been sent to Mali to help French forces and Malian troops battle Islamic extremists there. The British military said it also transported Ghanaian soldiers to Mali the same way.
The ministry declined to comment further. Ansaru had said it believed the planes were part of a Nigerian and British rescue mission for the abducted hostages.
The UK has offered military support in the past in Nigeria to free hostages. In March 2012, its special forces backed a failed Nigerian military raid to free Christopher McManus, who had been abducted months earlier with Italian Franco Lamolinara from a home in Kebbi state. Both hostages were killed in that rescue attempt.
"I am grateful to the Nigerian government for their unstinting help and cooperation," Mr Hague said in a statement, without addressing the claim that the UK had launched a rescue effort.
In its statement Saturday, Ansaru also blamed the killings on a pledge by Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan to do "everything possible" to free the hostages. Presidential spokesman Reuben Abati didn't respond to requests for comment.
While Nigerian authorities have yet to comment publicly about Ansaru's claim, it comes as the nation's security forces remain unable to stop the guerrilla campaign of bombings, shootings and kidnappings across the country's north. The majority of those attacks have been blamed on Boko Haram, an amorphous group that grew out of the remains of a sect that sparked a riot and a security crackdown in Nigeria in 2009 in which about 700 people were killed.
Boko Haram has hit international targets before, including an August 2011 car bombing of the UN office in Abuja that killed 25 people and wounded more than 100. An online video also purportedly claims that Boko Haram is currently holding hostage a family of seven French tourists who were abducted from neighboring Cameroon in late February. The group is blamed for killing at least 792 people last year alone, according to an Associated Press count.
Ansaru, which analysts believe split from Boko Haram in January 2012, seems to be focusing much more on Western targets. Analysts say it has closer links to al-Qa'ida in the Islamic Maghreb and cares more about international issues, as opposed to Boko Haram's largely local grievances. But much remains unknown about Ansaru, which has communicated through short, sometimes muddled online statements.
The hostage killings appear to be the worst in decades targeting foreigners working in Nigeria, an oil-rich nation that's a major crude supplier to the US. Most kidnappings in the country's southern oil delta see foreigners released after companies pay ransoms. The latest kidnappings in Nigeria's predominantly Muslim north, however, have seen the hostages killed either by their captors or in military raids to free them, suggesting a new level of danger for expatriate workers there.
The worst violence targeting foreign workers previously in the country's history came during its 1960s civil war. In May 1969, forces with the breakaway Republic of Biafra raided a Nigerian oil field, killing 10 Italian oil workers and a Jordanian. Eighteen other foreign workers taken by Biafran soldiers faced the death penalty, but later were pardoned and released.

Lion Allegedly Kills Zimbabwe Woman Having Sex In Bush

Zimbabwe Lion Alert.JPEG

A lion reportedly attacked a man and woman having sex in a bush in Africa, killing the woman.News website "My Zimbabwe" reports that Sharai Mawera and an unidentified male were having sex in a bushy area of a Zimbabwe village when a lion attacked them.
"Unfortunately the woman, who was also known as Mai Desire, was mauled to death by the lion, but her boyfriend managed to escape naked and he was only wearing a condom," a source reportedly told the outlet. "The two were having their quality time near Mahombekombe Primary School."

The man eventually notified police who, along with officials from the Zimbabwe Parks & Wildlife Management Authority, accompanied him to the scene where they allegedly found the woman's mauled body, according to the report. The Huffington Post reached out to the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management to confirm details of the attack but did not immediately receive a response.
The story of the deadly sex  may seem quite unbelievable. It is worth noting that a similar incident with an almost identical outcome was reported by the BBC in 2002. In August 2002, the news outlet reported that a man and woman were attacked by a lion when they were having sex in a bush near their Tanzanian village. The ferocious feline attacked the woman, but the man escaped. When he returned later with other villagers, the lion had disappeared and all that was left was the woman's mauled remains.

Still, the Associated Press is reporting that the National Parks and Wildlife Authority is warning Zimbabweans living near Harare to be cautious after rogue lions mauled two people to death on the shores of Lake Kariba.
On Tuesday,a lion is reported to have attacked a man and a woman in the area, according to the AP. The man was able to escape, but the woman was killed and most of her corpse was eaten.

The AP does not offer details on the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Although wild lion populations have drastically reduced in Africa over the past decades, lion attacks are not uncommon. In Tanzania alone   lions ahve been known to kill 100 people each year, according to the Smithsonian.

A 2005 study by the National Science Foundation discovered that   39 percent of lion attaks occur between March and May during the harvest season, when farmers often sleep outside to protect their livestock.

Nigerian woman lures lover from Spain to Nigeria, and swinddles him off all his money

Ada (r) and co-suspects Kenny
Ada and her Nigerian Lover Kenny Oyewmina

Ada Joy Okafor, 28, was repatriated from Spain about a year ago but really wanted to go back to the European country. She solicited the help of her Spanish lover, Jose Anthonio Murili Turrilo, to secure a visa.

 The victim, Turrilo
Ada's Spanish lover, Jose Anthonio Murili Turrilo

Meanwhile, Ada began another relationship in Nigeria with 25-year-old Kenny Oyewmina. In February, the lady invited her Spanish lover to Nigeria and was lodged in a hotel in Benin-City where Ada and her Nigerian boyfriend also lodged.

Subsequently, Ada allegedly found herself under pressure from Kenny to fleece Turrilo. Each time Turrillo was set to go to the bank, Kenny would arrive as the cab guy to drive  them to the bank. The Spanish  soon found out that he was  held allegedly captive by Kenny and Ada when he was asked  to withdraw  all the money from his domiciliary account else he will not leave Nigeria  alive.
Turrilo allegedly acceded to their demand until he emptied his domiciliary account.

When the suspects allegedly found out that he had no money anymore in his account, they  were said to have told him  to communicate to his sister in Spain requesting her to send down 2000 Euros.
The victim put a call across to his sister  but, rather than asking for money, he narrated his predicament in their native Spanish language unknown to the suspects. That was how Ada and Kenny landed in police net.
Edo State Police Commissioner, Mr Foluso Adebanjo, who paraded the suspects in Benin City,  said they were arrested after the Spanish police contacted the INTERPOL in Nigeria which,  in turn, contacted the state police command.

According to him, “after we received a phone call that Murili Turrillo was being held captive in a hotel, my men swung into action and the Spanish man was rescued while the two  suspects, Okafor Ada Joy and Kenny Oyewmina, were arrested. Investigations revealed that the female suspect lured her Spanish lover from Spain to Nigeria and he was made to withdraw all the money he had in his domiciliary account. When the two suspects discovered that their victim had no money left in his account, they forcefully asked him to call his sister in Spain to send 2000 Euros to them before he will be allowed to go back to Spain. It was the sister who contacted the Nigeria INTERPOL which then contacted us here. We have handed the victim over to INTERPOL while the two suspects will face prosecution”.

When asked why she did what she did, Ada told Sunday Vanguard: “It  is the devil.  I just don’t know what happened. The man is my boyfriend while I was in Spain; so I actually wanted him to help me get a visa so that I could go back to Spain. He actually wanted to help me but I don’t know what happened that we collected all his money. I never intended to hurt him because he is my lover but devil used us to cause this problem now. I feel sorry for what I did”.

Boko Haram Planned to Shoot Down President Jonathan's Plane in Maiduguri

alt

It has now been revealed that the anti-air craft shoulder fired weapons seized from insurgents in Maiduguri over the weekend was to be used to shoot down President Goodluck Jonathan's plane as he flew into Maiduguri.
The weapons were seized by the Military Joint Taaf Force  (JTF) and included 3 anti aircraft guns; 10 rocket propelled grenade tubes; 3 general purpose machine guns; 17 AK47 rifles; 3 G3 rifles; 1 pistol (lama); 20 RPG bombs; 12 RPG chargers; 1x 36 hand held grenade; 1 teargas rifle; 33 AK 47 magazines; 11 FN magazines; 3 G3 magazines; 11,068 assorted ammunitions; 2 technical vehicles with mounted anti aircraft stands;1 box of weapons cleaning kit; 4 swords and two knifes;5 walking talkies; 4 VHF handheld sets; 1 multi links router; and assorted uniforms and kits.
An informed source revealed thus The fact that assorted uniforms of security agencies, especially those serving in the Joint Task Force were recovered in the Friday operation, is fueling the intelligence that there was indeed a plan by the group and their sponsors to breach the security of the president”
It would be recalled that the JTF spokesman, Lt. Col. Sagir Musa, told journalists that these weapons were seized from insurgents after "moles" within the organization exposed their plans.

Yerima Arrested, Released Over Alleged Incitement

Former governor of Zamfara State and  senator representing Zamfara North Senatorial District, Senator Ahmed Sani Yerima, was picked up by the police in Kaduna Saturday after featuring on the Hausa phone-in programme “ Hanu Dayawa” broadcast by the Kaduna station of the Federal Radio Corporation (FRCN).

Sani was said to have declared while responding to a question from one of the listeners that leaders of the All Progressive Congress (APC) will mobilise Nigerians for a peaceful protest at the Eagle Square just like it happened in Egypt if the party is not registered.

The Kaduna State Police Commissioner, Mr. Olufemi Adenaike, was said to have gone to the radio station to invite Sani to his office after the two-hour programme which ended at 12 noon.

Sani who spoke with journalists before he left for the police headquarters said he was invited by the police commissioner who  asked him to see him after the radio programme.

According to Sani, “he (the police commissioner) wanted us to go together , but may be seeing the large crowd with me, he said I should come and see him.

“I don’t sense anything because I know what I said, he has taken the recorded CD of the radio programme. I said if there is any item by anybody in any quarter to prevent APC from being registered, we can go as far as staging peaceful protest at the Eagle Square, we will stay there 24 hours through out the day until our demands are  granted. That is all I said.
I am not under arrest, I am just being invited by the CP and I am going to see him. It is the CP himself that invited me. He said he was directed from Abuja to invite me.  He said that they have received calls to invite me to his office and I am going there now,” Sani told reporters before he went to the headquarters of the Kaduna State Police Command.

Sani disclosed that at the police headquarters ,“We played the recorded interview for two hours. Where they are more  interested in the interview is where a listener called to ask me what will happened after meeting all the necessary procedure for the registration of the APC and it is not registered.

“I answered by saying that myself, Gen. Buhari, Bola Tinubu, Ibrahim Shekarau  and other prominent members of the party will converge at Eagle Square and stage a peaceful protest until the party is registered just like it happened in Egypt”.

However commenting on the arrest, the police commissioner insisted that the former governor was not arrested neither did anybody called him from Abuja over the radio programme.

Let me start by saying that I am seriously disappointed by journalists, in the sense that you are blowing nothing out of proportion. If you   are in my shoes as the commissioner of police of a state and  you start getting calls from concerned citizens of the state that somebody has made an inciting statement on the radio, will you go to burukutu (local brew) joint and start drinking?  You have to make a move.

“All I did was to go the radio house and I met the distinguished Senator and I said, please, I want to know what you said. He said, no problem, let me finish and I will come with you to the office. This is what has transpired and I am surprised that people are saying many things, that CP has arrested him  or that CP has orders from Abuja.

“The distinguished senator is not under arrest.  All we did was to find out what he said and he said they were going to go on a peaceful demonstration. And I said, define what you mean by peaceful demonstration, considering that Kaduna State is a volatile state. I don’t want anything to happen in my domain. I am completely satisfied with what he has said and he is free to go. There was no directive from anywhere. We were doing things on our own,” the police commissioner explained.

Also in a statement  about what transpired at the police headquarters, a copy of which was made available to newsmen, Yerima  said “during the phone in programme, I was asked if there is any move not to register  our new party APC, what can we do? And my response was that if we met all the requirements and INEC refused to register us, we shall embark on a peaceful protest to INEC until we are registered.

“Then the moderator asked me what I meant by peaceful protest? Then I responded by saying just like it happened in Egypt. We can go to Eagle Square together with Gen. Buhari, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Ibrahim Shekarau and others to mobilise people without using any weapon for a peaceful protest until our party is registered.”

Sani said the police asked him, “assuming our peaceful protest is not yielding desired result what next? And my answer to that question is that we are practicing democracy in Nigeria. If the President of Egypt can yield to the pressure of his people in a peaceful protest, I am sure that with the integrity of Prof. Jega that I know personally, he will yield to the people’s pressure and make sure so long as we met all the legal requirements, we are registered.

According to him, the police told him that  knowing the security situation in Kaduna being a PDP state, some people may read meanings to what he said and try to make mischief.

The former governor however expressed surprise at the police invitation, saying that as a former governor and chief security officer of Zamfara state and a distinguished senator, he will never called for violence, nor support or participate in violence.

For eight years that I served in Zamfara state as governor, even with the implementation of sharia’a, there was never violence between Muslims and Christians because of my firm believe in peaceful coexistence. So whoever called the CP from Abuja is the one trying to be mischievous and cause crisis in Nigeria” Sani said.
