Fire aftermath- NFF may be probed!

Following the fire that engulfed the secretariat of the NFF on Wednesday, information revealed there are strong indications that the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) may bounce on the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) any time from now, as the Sports Ministry has asked the Commission to probe the mountain of corruption allegations leveled against the football federation.
A top government source hinted on Thursday that the government has asked the Commission to probe the football financial dealings over sometime and wondered why the EFCC has not acted.
"I am surprised that the EFCC has not commenced investigation of the NFF. May be the action has been stopped," the source said.
It was alledged that the government is baffled at the fire that razed the secretariat, but is yet to make its position known.
Efforts to confirm the veracity of the government letter proved abortive as the EFCC Spokesman, Wilson Uwajurien denied knowledge of such letter to the commission.

Discharged Ebola Patients Warned to Abstain From Sex!

The Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) has warned that infected men who have recovered from the killer Ebola virus disease (EVD) can still transmit the virus through their semen for up to seven weeks after the recovery.
Director General of the Institute, Innocent Ujah, gave the warning on Thursday at a one-day sensitisation programme on the EVD at the Lagos State University (LASU).
Ujah, whose presentation was titled, 'Clinical features and management of Ebola virus Disease', stressed that men who have recovered from the illness should abstain from sexual intercourse till about eighth to ninth week of total recovery.
"Men who have recovered from the disease can still transmit the virus through their semen for up to seven weeks after recovery from illness.
"Any man that has recovered from the Ebola disease should wait for eight to nine weeks after recovery before having sexual intercourse, in order not to transmit the virus to another person," he counselled.
Ujah, a gynaecologist, said NIMR was aware that the virus is coming and it has started preparing for it, adding that the institute is preparing to upgrade its facilities to take care of the disease and other deadly ones.
He reiterated that there is no definite therapy or vaccine against Ebola, noting that Nigerians have never paid sufficient attention to infectious diseases like this.
Ujah added that this is the first time Nigerians have responded to emergency.
Also, Adeyeye Arigbabuwo, whose presentation was entitled, 'EVD in the community: The myths and prevention', stated that myths refer to a lot of rumours, beliefs, perception from ordinary taboos, culture-guided understanding, sentiments and at some extreme, hard views that may not have scientific backing but being peddled around to create scare or fear with or without deliberate intentions.
According to him, examples of myths around Ebola recently include the use of salt in water to bathe for reduction of Ebola virus chances of infectiousness, the chewing of bitter cola in large quantity to prevent contagiousness of Ebola virus and the consumption of some daily quantity of condensed milk to prevent Ebola virus attack among others.
He stated that in breaking these myths, "it is good to note that Ebola virus is the cause of Ebola virus disease".
"It is when we come in contact with an infected living person or dead corpse and we have contacts with either their body fluids or secretions like blood, vomiting, stool, saliva, sweat etc that we are likely to be infected," Arigbabuwo said.
On its part, the Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS) has offered to support government's efforts in containing the spread of Ebola virus in Nigeria.
But it said the country could effectively tame the highly infectious disease only if certain measures are taken.
President of the academy, Oyewale Tomori, in a statement on Thursday said the institution remains optimistic that Nigeria was capable of controlling the outbreak of the disease if the available human and material resources are maximally deployed.

Breach at U.S. government contractor affected at least 25,000 workers!

A cyber attack at a company that performs background checks for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security compromised data of at least 25,000 government workers, and that number could rise, an agency official said on Friday.
The official told Reuters that DHS plans to notify approximately 25,000 employees that they may be "impacted" by the computer breach at Falls Church, Virginia-based US Investigations Services (USIS) over the coming days.
"More could be notified in coming weeks as we learn more about the breach," said the official, who asked not to be identified by name.
The company disclosed the attack earlier this month, but did not say how many records had been compromised. It did say the intrusion has "all the markings of a state-sponsored attack."
Security experts say the attack was particularly disturbing because files on background checks typically contain highly personal data that foreign intelligence agencies could attempt to exploit to intimidate government workers with access to classified information.
"They would be collecting this data to identify individuals who might be vulnerable to extortion and recruitment," said Dmitri Alperovitch, chief technology officer with cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, which sells intelligence on state-sponsored cyber attacks.
The Department of Homeland Security has suspended all work with USIS since the breach was disclosed as the government conducts a multi-agency investigation to identify the scope of the attack. The FBI has also launched an investigation.
DHS has asked employees to monitor financial information and be suspicious of unusual unsolicited calls, visits and emails from individuals asking about employees or other work-related issues, according to the official.
Individuals who received any suspicious "targeted" communications will be provided credit monitoring services, the official said.
But Alperovitch said credit monitoring would not be of much help because state-sponsored attackers would not be interested in identity theft. Instead, the government should be providing training in areas such as identifying individuals who might try to compromise them through extortion, he said.
USIS says it is the biggest commercial provider of background investigations to the federal government, with over 5,700 employees, and provides services in all U.S. states and territories, as well as abroad.
Officials with USIS, which is a division of privately held Altegrity Inc, could not immediately be reached for comment.

Boko Haram Takes Over Police College!

Borno State Police Command Spokesman, Superintendent Gideon Jibrin, confirmed that Boko Haram fighters on Wednesday seized the mobile police training college in Limankara, near Gwoza, Borno State.
"The police commissioner has dispatched a team to Gwoza to ascertain what really happened and the number of casualty. Of course this will take some time because there is no GSM communication in Gwoza," he said.
News said regular Policemen from various units in Gombe and Nasarawa states as well as the Federal Capital Territory were undergoing specialized training at the school at the time of the attack, .
It is one of the two mobile training schools in the country aside the one in Ila-orangun, Osun State.
A source said even before the attack on Gwoza, authorities at the school had been taking measures following threats of an imminent attack.
"Some of the attackers drove from Gwoza and many others descended from the Mandara Mountain and went straight to the training school," an instructor reportedly said.
"Dozens of them armed with guns, rocket propelled grenades (RPGs) and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were given cover and led into the police training facility by five armoured personnel carriers (APC)," he said.
Another police source said there was "fierce battle" between the insurgents and policemen which started at the gate of the training school and thereafter, the fight raged on in all parts of the school.
"The terrorists, dressed in both police and military uniforms, went to the training school in day light and divided themselves into various groups. Some entered the premises by scaling the fence from the rear. Many others attempted going in through the main gate but were confronted.
"The fight at the gate lasted more than an hour before the terrorists blew off the armoured tank that was giving cover to our men at the gate. That was how they succeeded in going into the premises," he said.
It was not clear how many Policemen were undergoing training at the time of the attack but a source said they should be around 350.
Police Force Headquarters spokesman, DCP Emmanuel Ojukwu, confirmed the attack, saying policemen reported the facility being attacked by over 150 insurgents who engaged them in a gun fight.
A report on the BBC Hausa said the insurgents came in three trucks and attacked the college.
"We were sitting by the roadside, when we saw three black TATA vehicles came and went into the college," a resident said.
"Upon seeing that, we then run away into the bush. But we later heard that they (Boko Haram) chased away all the police in the college."
