Photo-Speak: Cleaner Lagos Initiative Needs To Up-Their-Game!

"We must acknowledge the environmental degradation that plague the State and the urgent need for a world class comprehensive waste management system that addresses this crucial quality of life issue" - Akinwunmi Ambode, Lagos State Governor, on Cleaner Lagos Initiative.

Laudable as the Lagos State Government's efforts on the Cleaner Lagos Initiative is, apparent in several on-going cleaning and refurbishing of the state, and sensitisation programs, using Social Media platforms.

However, images, as seen in pictures attached to this publication, is the current situation of Ilaje bus-stop, Mobil road and environ-communities, located on the Lekki Peninsula axis of Lagos- State, indicates that the effect of the CLI, is yet to be felt through out the State.

Due to lack of proper management, hence no construction of conveniences, residents of the densely Ikota Housing Estate, off Mobil Road, resort to what is commonly known as "short-put", i.e: defecating in polythene bags and throwing them across the street...as seen in the picture below:

To achieve its aim of "protecting the environment, human health and social living standards of Lagos State residents", the Cleaner Lagos Initiative (CLI), needs to intensify its effort, by making their presence felt in most parts of the Lagos Metropolis.

An extensive construction of the Orile to peharps Seme Border express-way and rail way is on-going, howbeit that does not mean the condition of the area work have not gotten to should be neglected to this extent.

What happens to the weekly (Thursdays, 7-10am) sanitation supposedly observed in Lagos State? 

Is the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) aware of this situation and what plans do they have to check this.     

Casualty Figure in Mexico 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Might Be Lower Than Speculated!

Hope is high for survivors at the Mexico earthquake as latest information released by Mexico's head of Civil Protection Agency, Luis Felipe Puente, indicates that the presumed number of casualties in the 7.1 magnitude earthquake, could be less. 

Mr. Puente revised the number from the earlier reported 248, to 217 casualties.

Official figures revealed that Mexico City recorded about 86 casualties, Morelos,  71 casualties, Puebla, 43 casualties, Edomex, 12 casualties, Guerrero, 4 casualties while Oaxaca recorded the least, with 1 casualty.

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto ordered the evacuation of affected hospitals and the transfer of its patients to other medical units; admonished Mexico city residents to avoid travel on streets and avenues so as to allow free movement of emergency personnel and vehicles, he further called for calm as government assess the situation. 

A 7.1 magnitude earthquake, described as the "most powerful" since Mexico's 1985 earthquake, struck 37 kilometres from Atlixco, Puebla, southern Mexico on Tuesday, September, 19th, 2017. The earthquake left scores dead including children and adults after an elementary school partially collapsed, left about 15 people dead in a church during mass, brought-down over 40 buildings in Mexico city, and several others across the country, registered over 11 aftershock reaching up to magnitude 4. 

Mexican Soldiers, Navy Marines and citizens are among the rescue team as the search for survivor continue. 

Shelters have been provided in different locations for displaced persons in Mexico city.

Leaders from across the world, and eminent personalities expressed sympathy and have offered support to Mexico. 

Nigeria's Infrastructural Development And Maintenance Culture!

To promote growth, responsible governments the world over invest huge sum of money the year round in infrastructure works and integral projects. Howbeit, it is the duty of both governments and citizens to see to it that these infrastructures lasts for a very long time through maintenance.

The rate at which supposedly completed projects develop faults and dilapidated in very short time is simply alarming. For instance, the state of the newly built side-walks along Lekki express-way calls for a review on the Nigerian contractors' ethics in using quality materials/ delivering 'good-jobs' and the maintenance culture.

At some point, these projects appeared as though there were rushed. Bricks on side-walks are not properly laid, where there were, they are placed haphazardly.  Why spend much money on projects that only lasts for as long as there were completed.

Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, reacted to the nation's recent emergence from recession, stating that "Until coming out of recession translates into meaningful improvement in people's lives, our work cannot be said to be done".

Nigeria's economy experienced a significant growth for the first time in 25-years as the country's Gross Domestic Product increased by 0.55 percent (year-on-year) in real terms in the second quarter of 2017. 

Nigeria's National Bureau of Statistics revealed this Tuesday, August, 5, 2017. According to the NBS's report, the nation's GDP shrank by 0.25 year-on-year in real terms in the first quarter of 2017, representing the 5th successive quarter of contraction since the first quarter of 2017.  

The current 0.55 growth is reportedly higher than the -1.49 percent recorded in the corresponding quarter of 2016, and higher than the 1.46 percent points from the rate recorded in the preceding quarter, (revised to - 0.91 percent from -0.52 percent). 

The NBS further disclosed that quarter on quarter, the actual GDP growth was 3.23 percent. This development indicates a first emergence from a 25-year-old recession. 

President Buhari pledged that his administration will ensure that the ordinary Nigerian feels the impact of this recovery.
