Will Lagos Ever Stop Flood Sitautions?

Life threatening flooding of residential and business areas around the Lagos Metropolis, especially at the Ikoyi, Victorial Island and Lekki Peninsula axis has been the norm, during the rainy seasons.

Over time, the state government has come up with different schemes to curb this situation. It is no longer news that this catastrophic situation is majorly caused by- blocked gutters and canals, construction buildings on spaces supposed to be for canals or even Lakes.

How can such situation be arrested when spaces supposed to be for the construction of canals, are constantly been allocated or sold for construction purposes.

The picture below shows how part of the canal space, which was supposed to run across Mobil road area, opposite the Emerald Estate and which should have run through the Ikota community, has been blocked.

Following the recent ban on commercial motor bikes and tricycles, otherwise called Okada and Keke, across the six local government areas and nine local government councils, which took effect on Saturday, February 1st, 2020,  the Lagos State government on Tuesday, 4th of February, commenced commercial waterways transportation, with the official launch of eight newly acquired speed boats.

Calling on  private investors to move in and harness opportunities in what was described as a "value chain", the governor said the aim is "to deliver an effective and integrated inter-modal transportation system in addressing the perennial issue of traffic congestion on the road."

During the ceremony which held at Badore Ferry Terminal in Eti-Osa Local Government Area, at the Lekki axis of the state, the Governor also launched a mobile application designed to facilitate easy access to the water transportation services.

The ferries, built with comfortable seats, in-built Wi-Fi and modern technological devices that will aid smooth operations and safety were reportedly designed and manufactured locally, while the speed boats are expected to be operated by the Lagos Ferry Services.

NB: The Lagos State Water ways needs to be cleared of  'sea-weed'  to enable smooth transportation.
