Lagos Bans Parties,Social Functions In Public Schools!

The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Mrs Idiat Oluranti Adebule, on Tuesday, 26th Januray, while briefing the media on the strategic focus of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s administration on education for 2016, disclosed that Lagos State Government will no longer allow social functions and parties in public schools.

This is coming as just as owners of private schools across the state have been warned to comply with rules and regulations guiding their operations.
In her word Mrs Adebule said “The Governor has directed that schools will no longer be used for social activities any longer. We want to implore members of the public to report any school that violates this directive and we would ensure that defaulting schools are sanctioned accordingly.”
...“Much as private schools are partners in the sector, we would not fold our hands and watch the standard flopped. Some schools even operate without registering with the government. We want to urge such schools to do the right thing or government will have no choice but to do what it has to do,” she said.

While giving a detailed presentation on the policy thrust of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s administration for the education sector, Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Mr. Obafela Bank-Olemoh stated that the Ambode administration was already at the planning stage of constructing a massive library, while the actual establishment of the project would commence in the next quarter of the year.

Bank-Olemoh further revealed that the administration will build 10 new model schools with state of the art facilities, while two new technical colleges will be built in the course of the year in areas where such facilities are urgently needed.

On the Ibile Tablets, the Special Adviser said 324,000 tablets to Senior Secondary School (SSS) students, adding that plans have been concluded to register all students in both public and private schools in the state under the Lagos State Student Personal Administration Number (LASPIN) project to aid proper planning. Concerning the free meal in schools project, Bank-Olemoh said the state government is currently perfecting its framework for the eventual take off, adding that the project is expected to enhance the learning capacity of the pupils and boost the economy of the state.

Rights Group Condemns South Africa's Scholarship Awards To Virgin Girls!

The Women’s Rights Group People Opposing Women Abuse (POWA) have criticized the recent scholarship awarded to 16 young women who voluntarily pledged to remain virgins thereby encourage students to be “pure and focus on school.” POWA argued that “Virginity testing will never stop the spread of HIV and AIDS,” adding that testing girls to see if they were virgins violates “the rights and dignity” of the girls.

South Africa Broadcasting Corporation reported that South Africa’s Department of Basic Education recorded 20,000 pregnancies among girls and young women in schools during 2014, with 223 occurring at primary schools.

With 5.6 million people, which represents about 17 percent of the population living with the disease, the country is the site of the world’s largest HIV epidemic,

Mfanozelwe Shozi, the chairman of South Africa’s Commission for Gender Equality, told AP that she appreciated the mayor’s intentions but that “there is an issue around discrimination on the basis of pregnancy, virginity and even against boys.”
