Three Feared Dead, Seven Rescued in Lagos Boat Mishap!


Three people were  reportedly feared dead yesterday while seven others were rescued from a boat which capsized at Ogogoro village, Boulos in Navy Town located in Apapa area of Lagos State.
Speaking with newsmen on the tragedy, the director of the Lagos State Emergency Management Aency, (LASEMA) Dr. Femi Oke Osanyintolu, said three people were feared drowned in the mishap while seven were rescued.
He said: "A local passenger boat with ten passengers capsised. It was going from coconut jetty, Apapa to Ojo town. It capsised behind. Seven were rescued while three are missing. The boat's take off point was Irewe near Ijegun in Satelite."
He said the boat which was conveying women and children were travelling on the high sea at about 12 midnight without headlight and collided with a bigger boat.
Osanyintolu said the occupants were rescued by the Nigerian Navy Special Unit, officers of the National Inland Waterways Agency (NIWA), Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA)
The LASEMA boss appealed to local canoe users to always use life jackets when moving with their canoes on the high sea.
Also confirming the incident, NEMA in a statement by its spokesman, Ibrahim Farinloye, said seven persons were rescued alive, saying they included a woman, child, the boat operator, among others.
Farinloye said the survivors have been taken to undisclosed hospital in Apapa area of the state.
