Taxi driver attack in Manchester

Muhammed Arshad, 48, was rushed to hospital in an ambulance after the attack by the men as he finished his shift on Sunday afternoon, November 10, 2013.
The men were still outside the taxi office, 10 minutes after being refused service, in Bloom Street in Manchester city centre.
Mr Arshad was punched by one of the men outside the door and dragged across the street to a car park in Sackville Street.
One of the men then threw a metal barrier which hit Mr Arshad in the face while several members of the taxi firm staff tried to defend him.
He was taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary with injuries to his face including a puncture wound to his right cheek, a cut above his left eye and severe bruising to his left.
Mr Arshad was too shaken to talk about his ordeal.
However, Les Gunn from taxi firm Manchester Cars told the Manchester Evening News: “This nasty and unprovoked assault goes to show that it’s not only private hire taxi drivers that can be at risk.
“This time the victim was one of our managers as he finished work.
“We are horrified at what happened, but are also thankful, as this could have been so much worse.
“Our senior management team were made aware straight away and have made sure that Muhammed has all the support he needs and wish him a speedy recovery from his injuries.”
The men ran off towards Princess Street after the incident and were later seen near Abingdon Street.
One was skinny and the other well built and muscular. Both had Manchester accents.
Manchester Cars is one of the city’s biggest private hire operators and has 300 drivers.
The incident happened just before 3pm on Sunday.

Anambra election, Jega promises creditably!

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor

Attahiru Jega, yesterday, declared that Saturday’s governorship election in

Anambra State would be the best election so far in the country.

Speaking during a stakeholders’ forum at the Women Development Centre,

Awka, Jega said the commission had made adequate preparation to ensure a

credible, free and fair election.

However, he appealed to political parties and their candidates to cooperate

with the commission to actualise the goal, as INEC would give all the parties

and candidates a level playing ground.

He said INEC had corrected the errors in the controversial voters’ registers

earlier given to political parties, adding that the mistakes were computer

errors.

Presenting the corrected copies of the voters’ register to political parties, Jega

asked them to carefully study them and raise objections where necessary

before the election.

We are transparent and we will continue to be transparent and fair to all the

parties. We are human beings and we can make mistakes and correct them.

We have concluded the training of our staff, we have introduced security

features to protect our ballot papers and ballot boxes for every polling unit

with a unique code number for each unit so that you can not take a ballot

paper from one unit to another,” he said.

On multiple registration, the INEC boss said that the commission had already

arrested some defaulters and were concluding arrangements to prosecute

them and warned voters in the state who had double registration not to go to

the polling units on Saturday as security agents had been directed to arrest

any offender.

Jega warned that there would be no movement of government officials in the

name of monitoring the election, adding that party agents must wear INEC

tags to enable them enter and stay at the polling boots assigned to them.

Equally, he advised governorship candidates against going to the polling

booths to vote with their armed aides, noting that it had caused violence in

the past.

Oluchi Orlandi Insults Journalists At Show’s Premiere!

It was reported that less than three weeks after Nigerian international model, Oluchi Onweagba-Orlandi launched a series of attacks on Twitter and called her fellow Africans animals, she, on Friday 8 November, re-enacted her saucy side as she insulted a group of journalists who were at the premiere of her new show, Africa’s Next Top Model.

Oluchi, it was gathered, who was the chief hostess at the event held at Pravada Lounge on Victoria Island, Lagos, created an ugly drama as she snubbed the media reps who had asked to be treated well after being made to stand while others were on their seats during the delayed press conference.

The whole drama started after the model, who came far late into the event, caused the organisers to move the earlier scheduled media briefing into the noisy main hall of the night club.
The journalists were not comfortable with the arrangement considering the boisterous crowd and noise.
After about three questions and her impolite responses, the newsmen stopped  asking questions. Oluchi sensed their coldness and then asked if there were further questions, to which one of the journalists expressed disgust over the humiliation they had been subjected to.
Rather than apologise, Oluchi angrily muttered: “I am only here to party and not to be answering questions.”

And she walked away leaving the angry journalists in the middle of the club. When the organisers went to confer with her, she remained adamant.
when the whole scenario  tried to intervene and iron out the issue,Oluchi threw caution to the winds when she told the repoter, “Don’t touch me please,” when she was about to be stopped from walking away for the second time.

Oluchi should be world class…she should be able to control herself in public no matter how upset she is. It’s called anger management,” said a concerned guest who observed the drama at the event.

Oluchi has a record of bad temperament and is said to be hostile to journalists. That was what manifested when she threw caution to the winds with her recent outburst on Twitter.
Her series on Twitter read:
“I am disgusted. DISGUSTED by human behaviour…Africans be like “no funds no meetings”… MONEY is not the root of evil. “Greedy Humans” are the root of evil… Hopefully I won’t throw up soon. Bunch of inconsiderate animals!!!!…They know price tag of everything and the VALUE of nothing!!!…Incompetent idiots. Ugly souls. Monsters in human forms!…They won’t let me enjoy my beauty sleep!”

And she reportedly got a lot of bashing for her coarse tweets.
One Akindele wrote then: “This girl is just a fool…so because you marry Oyibo now, folks back home are now ‘Africans’? Shame, a Nigerian should be propagating this sort of ignorance.

Can’t she just say ‘These guys’ or even be specific? But she would rather tar all Africans, feeding into stereotypes of racists around her. Nonsense, is Africa one country? How many Africans have she met? Village girl made into Face of Africa.

Fire Guts Ikeja Police College!

The newly renovated buildings at the Police College, Ikeja, Lagos state have been gutted by fire.
Ikeja Police College
Daily Times gathered that the fire occurred at the 11B quarters of the Police College on Tuesday.

Jinadu said a distress call was afterwards made to the men of  the Fire Service who quickly responded promptly and were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the next block.
It was observed that  the upper rooms of the one story apartment was ravaged by the inferno suggestive that properties of the officer in that part of the block went up in flames
However, the DSP said investigations are ongoing to determine the real cause of the fire.

US aircraft USS George Washington arrives Philippines to assist typhoon recovery effort!

The USS George Washington will expand search-and-rescue operations and provide a platform for helicopters to move supplies, the White House said.
US Marines arrive at Villamor Air Base, Philippines, 10 November 2013
The top US commander in the Philippines told the BBC that US military support would be on an unprecedented scale.
Some 11 million people have been affected by the typhoon.
Although the official death toll stands at more than 2,300, local officials and aid workers fear it could rise much higher.
With images of the suffering flashed around the world, a huge international aid effort has swung into operation.
The USS George Washington arrived on Thursday along with its escort ships, the US Navy said. Two US destroyers have already arrived in the Philippines and other US vessels are expected to arrive in about a week, it added.
On Wednesday the US also ordered the activation of a hospital ship, the USNS Mercy. However, if deployed it would not reach the Philippines until December.
Marine Brigadier General Paul Kennedy, commanding general of the 3rd Marine Expeditionary Brigade in Japan, told the BBC that the US aid effort was being stepped up to a level that has "probably never been applied" to a humanitarian crisis.
He said the arrival of the USS George Washington would triple the number of available helicopters. As well as search and rescue capabilities, the helicopters can deliver hundreds of thousands of gallons of water every day, he added.
Other countries have also pledged help in the shape of financial aid, relief supplies or emergency teams.
Britain is sending a team of medical experts, a Royal Navy warship and an RAF transport aircraft.
Japan is also preparing to send up to 1,000 troops as well as naval vessels and aircraft, Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera said.
Orla Fagan, at the UN's Humanitarian Affairs office in Manila, said that after a slow start, the aid effort was now accelerating.
"People are angry, they are distressed, they are traumatised, and we are trying to get this stuff out to them," she said.
It roared into the eastern and central islands of the Philippines on Friday, flattening buildings, uprooting trees and sending a huge storm surge into coastal areas.
Philippine Cabinet Secretary Rene Almendras said his country was facing "the largest logistics operation that we've ever done in the history of the Philippines".
Some residents have expressed anger at the slow speed of the government relief effort but Mr Almendras said authorities had been overwhelmed.
"The volume of food packs, the volume of rice, the volume of canned goods is being handled, repacked and transported now - that's never been done on this magnitude," he said.
"But we accept the fact that our operations are supposed to reach out to everyone - and we will."
Growing panic
UN humanitarian chief Valerie Amos, visiting the devastated city of Tacloban, said the situation was desperate with residents left without food or fresh water for five days.
"The priority has got to be, let's get the food in, let's get the water in. We [had] a lot more come in today, but even that won't be enough," she said.
"There are still areas that we have not been able to get to where people are in desperate need... I do feel that we have let people down."
Tacloban's airport was left in ruins by the storm, but in recent days US military planes have been arriving with World Food Programme supplies. A French-Belgian field hospital has also been set up.
The number of US military personnel on the ground is expected to triple from just over 300 now to more than 1,000 in a week, officials said.
Manila has sent troops to Tacloban to keep law and order, but correspondent say there is a growing sense of panic.
On Wednesday there were reports of shots being fired in a street and of a teenager being stabbed in the stomach.
In some areas survivors have resorted to digging up water pipes and extracting fuel from reservoirs at petrol stations.
Police spokesman Reuben Sindac told  the BBC that security forces were now in control of key installations, preventing looting and ensuring the safety of aid deliveries.
Cebu governor Hilario Davide told the BBC that he was "concerned" but hoped looting would not take place in Cebu.
"As long as they know that food and water are forthcoming, I'm sure that people will learn to be patient but of course we hear already reports of people getting impatient, especially the islands because it seems there's been a delay in the delivery of these relief goods."
Health experts have warned that the worst-affected areas are entering a peak danger period for the spread of infectious diseases.
