Uniport Student's Death, What Lessons Can Be Learnt From It?

The recent death of Kelechi Precious, a Theater Art and Film study, student of the University of Port Harcourt, on Monday August 3, at the University Teaching Hospital (UPTH), was a sad incident that could have been avoided.

Miss  Precious was said to have collapsed at her hostel bathroom while having her bath around 5 am Monday, and was taken to the University Teaching Hospital's Accident and Emergency Ward by fellow students, where she was reportedly rejected for lack of space. The  students pleaded that the hospital make use of the car with which they took her to the hospital, as her bed, but that plea was turned down.

On the refusal to attend to the deceased at the Teaching Hospital, the students took her to Fountain Hospital at Ozuoba area of Port- Harcourt, on getting there, the doctor asked the students to go fetch Precious's relatives, thereafter directed them to take her back to the Teaching Hospital.

The students told the doctor at Fountain Hospital that they just left the Teaching Hospital, they were then directed to another hospital,  Ebonyi Hospital where the doctor on duty confirmed that there was no life left in Precious. Not giving up that easily on their own, the students further took the deceased to the Military Hospital, where she was confirmed dead. They were advised to make an entry at any police station around. After making an entry at Choba Police Station, they took the corpse back to the University Teaching Hospital mortuary, where ironically, it was accepted. There is enough space to accept corpses in the Teaching Hospital, but not enough bed space to admit and attend to ailing citizens.

Following the frustrations their efforts met while trying to save the life of the late Kelechi Precious, the students, led by the Student Union Government (SUG) of the university took to the streets, to protest against  the inability of the Teaching Hospital to save the young lady's life

This is not the first time an incident like this has occurred, not just at the Rivers State University teaching Hospital, but in so many teaching hospitals across the country.
For an incident of this magnitude to occur in Port- Harcourt, the capital city of the oil rich Rivers State, one can not help but cry 'foul'. The resource 'curse' omen must have been at play, or how else can one describe a situation where a city supposed to be blessed with the black gold, lack 'enough' basic facility like 'beds' in its Teaching Hospital, while the stake holders busied them selves with endless combats and allegations of 'who's after whose life', instead of hiding their heads in shame. And shame....that seems to be just what we lack.
What is the State House of Assembly doing about this unfortunate incident, the management of the teaching hospital should have been summoned concerning this development. It will not be surprising if this too passed, and is forgotten, like the 'Aluu Four' killing.
This piece might pass as any other rant, as these stake holders are obviously not bothered. How can they be affected, when they and all theirs, are flown abroad at the slightest head-ache, while the masses, whom they pledged and claimed responsibility for, are the worse hit of every administration's irresponsible activities. A situation where avoidable deaths happen in our hospitals is totally unacceptable.
This should be a wake-up call for us all, though we can not change the past,  we can not bring back the many lives lost due to government's inability to produce basic facilites in our hospitals, but we can all decide today to start setting things right.

  • It begins with the government utilizing state funds in the channels they were meant to be use on, instead of cutting corners to enrich themselves.

  • It begins with government officials disbursing funds without asking for 80% or any % cuts what so ever, before they will release 'contract' funds to contractors.

  • It begins with these contractors getting jobs they were paid for, done, with the best quality materials and skilled workers there is.
Let us bear in mind that we can only reap what we have sown, corruption can only bred decadence, apart from the biblical miracle of Jesus, raising dead Lazarus, and Ezekiel's prophesy to dead bones, which raised and turned dead soldiers into a great legion, I have not come across a situation where a decayed object was redeemed.

The frustration and bitterness towards authority, being sowed into so many young lives, when the realization that they are indeed 'on their own', due to the actions of some government representatives, dawn on them, can only breed hostility and non-nonchalancy; I leave you to figure out what kind of broken leaders these 'victims' can turn into in the near future.

Pope Francis Urge Catholic Priests To Pardon Women Who Have Had Abortion!

Pope Francis has called on priests to pardon women who have had abortions, and the doctors who performed them during the on-coming jubilee year.
In the message released by the Vatican on Tuesday, the Pope said “I have decided, notwithstanding anything to the contrary, to concede to all priests for the Jubilee Year the discretion to absolve of the sin of abortion those who have procured it and who, with contrite heart, seek forgiveness for it,”
“The tragedy of abortion is experienced by some with a superficial awareness… many others… believe that they have no other option”.  he said.
The Pontiff added he was “well aware of the pressure” that some women were under to abort, adding that he had “met so many women who bear in their heart the scar of this agonising and painful decision”.
“The forgiveness of God cannot be denied to one who has repented,” He wrote.

10 Individuals Who Became Wildly Successful After Facing Rejection!

Milton Hershey:

The man who blessed us with the sweet milk-chocolate treat we all love wasn’t a hit the first time around. Before launching his own candy business, he had worked for a local candy factory. But when he decided to go out on his own, he failed miserably. Despite two more failures, he returned to the family farm and perfected the art of making delicious milk-chocolate candy, which we enjoy in the form of Hershey chocolate today.

Theodor Giesel:

This author struggled to write a novel that publishing companies would call something other than “pure rubbish” 27 times. The man just wouldn’t quit, though. One fateful night, he ran into an old friend who had recently taken over as a children’s literature editor. The friend agreed to publish Giesel’s work. Better known today as Dr. Seuss, Giesel was never again called a failure after his first book struck it big.

Albert Einstein:

Despite being known as a true genius in the present day, this intellectual didn’t have a great start (to say he was running behind is an understatement). As a kid, he didn’t begin to speak a word until he was 4 years old. A few years later, his elementary school teachers considered him lazy because he would ask abstract questions that made no sense to others. He kept on anyway, eventually formulating the theory of relativity, something most of us still can’t understand today.

Benjamin Franklin:

A founding father, the inventor of bifocals and the lightning rod and elementary-school dropout -- it sounds crazy, but this is an accurate description of Franklin. His family couldn’t afford to finance his education after his 10th birthday, but that didn’t stop him. He read books like crazy and took every opportunity he could to learn. Ironically, Franklin is now found in the history books that 10-year-old kids around the world read every day.

Stephen King:

King is a best-selling writer (currently 350 million books sold and climbing) whose work has been made into several motion pictures. However, his first work was rejected 30 times, which lead to him throwing it in the trash. Thankfully, his wife made him keep working at, from that inauspicious start, Carrie was born.

Oprah Winfrey:

To many, losing a child is worse than losing a business. Oprah lived through this hellish reality after giving birth at 14. She managed to not only overcome this, but also being repeatedly molested by her cousin, uncle and a family friend. Despite her tragic past, she has worked hard to become a success and amass a net worth of $2.9 billion.

Thomas Edison:

Edison may just hold the record for most failed attempts before reaching success on a single project, having failed several thousand times before inventing a functional light bulb. His response has become famous to entrepreneurs: “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”

Michael Jordan:

As a kid, Jordan loved basketball and knew he wanted to make a career out of it, though no coach would give him a chance because he was short. After using an inside connection to get into a basketball camp from which players for college teams were chosen, he got noticed by a coach, who still chose not to invite him to the team. Jordan returned home discouraged, but decided to prove the coach wrong. Now a member of the NBA Hall of Fame, just about everyone would agree he succeeded.

Walt Disney:

Disney began his career by being fired by a newspaper for not being creative enough. Later, his Mickey Mouse cartoons were rejected because they were deemed to be “too scary for women.” If that wasn’t enough, "The Three Little Pigs" was also turned down because it only had four characters.
Thankfully, we have the Disney company today because Walt chose not to listen to any of his critics and press forward towards his dreams.

Kris Carr:

We all get hit by unforeseen obstacles. For Carr, it was a rare cancer. She fought her disease head on with a new nutritional lifestyle, developing a career as a successful author and health coach in the process. Despite facing challenging circumstances from the start, she is now looked to as one the most knowledgeable experts on healthy living online today.
