Ilaje / Ajah area of Lekki - Epe Express Way Blocked By Angry Youths!

Following an accident that claimed the life of an elderly woman by a hit and run vehicle, at near Ajah bus - stop in the early hours of Wednesday, 5th of March, 2014, irate youths, identified as the Ikota - Ajah Youth blocked the busy Ilaje Bus-stop end of the Lekki- Epe express way, in the Lekki Peninsular axis of Lagos state, Nigeria, resulting in a gridlock.

An eye witness told Roving Informant that the accident occurred very early in the morning, as the woman made to cross the express way. "I were at the Ajah end of the road heading to my shop at  Ilaje bus stop when all of a sudden a noticed that the private smaller car drove recklessly towards us, every pone scampered for safety and every one thought he was probably drunk; but something just told me that the driver has killed someone and was meaning to kill another going by the manner he was driving. It was when i got to the front of Bethel Int Church that i noticed people gathered around the body of a woman, then my suspicions was confirmed. The worse path is that the driver got away".

Another eye witness who said he was among members of the Red Cross Association that tried to give first aid treatment to the victim before she passed on said: "When we rushed to the spot, we noticed that the deceased was injured mostly on her waist, i  tried to see if i could revive her, but then she started jerking and then drew her last breath, i tried to save her, God knows i tried my best but we can not question God.

With tears running down his cheeks he continued: "People die here every day, what is keeping the government from building a foot bridge or at least a bump here at Ilaje bus stop". DPOAjiwe Police station Ajah- Lekki, Issah Lawal  who later arrived the scene to  ensure  peace and order peacefully persuaded the angry youth to see reasons and unblock the express way so that motorists could go about their normal businesses.

DPO Lawal told the youth he fully understand their grievance, and pleaded that they consider the stranded motorists and commuters who will be delayed or missed their various appointments and businesses due to the blockade.

Concerned individuals gathered in groups in solidarity with the Youths as they discussed the increasing rate of accidents that occurs on daily basis between Ikota and Ajah  areas of Lekki Peninsula.

According to them, the foot bridge under construction at the VGC end of the road will not solve the challenge as only few people will be using it, instead it should be constructed between Ilaje bus-stop and Ajah.
