A 72-year-old Indian woman, Daljinder Kaur, and her 79-year-old husband husband, Mohinder Singh Gill, became first time parents after Kaur was recently delivered of their first child after 46 years of marriage.
Indian's National Fertility and Test Tube centre said the baby was conceived using the couple's own egg and sperm and, despite being very small at birth, weighing just two kilograms (4.4lbs), the baby is in good health and "hearty".
At the initial stage, Anurag Bishnoi, who runs the fertility clinic, said he was skeptical about going ahead with the treatment, but tests indicated the mother would be able to carry the unborn baby.
The excited mun, Daljinder Kaur said she and her husband had almost given up hope of ever having a child of their own, and had faced ridicule in a country where infertility is sometimes seen as a curse from God. Howbeit, she did not believe she was too old to be a first-time mother and said she felt very well and fit enough to cope.
In 2008, it was reported that a 72-year-old woman from Uttar Pradesh state in northern India, gave birth to twins through IVF .
