Adekunle Adeniyi Apena, a legal practitioner just emerged regent of Ikeja Kingdom in Lagos State.
he was reportedly appointed on Friday by the Council of Ikeja Traditional Chiefs, following the death of his father, the Olu of Ikeja Kingdom, Oba Rauf Adeniyi Aremu Matemi early this month.
Punch news reports that the regent was presented with the staff of office after the traditional rites performed by the Chief Priest, Lateef Oluwaseyi, at the palace of the Olu of Ikeja. Following the presentation, all the chiefs in the area paid traditional homage to the new regent.
At the event, the Chairman of the Council of Ikeja Traditional Chiefs, Lateef Alao Yussuf Ishola-Apena stated that the regent’s tenure would be short as he would only be there till the installation of a new monarch.
He enjoined the chiefs to cooperate with the regent and forgive him for whatever misdeed he might have committed against them in the past “either knowingly or inadvertently.”
He explained that Apena’s choice as regent was the decision of all the traditional chiefs adding that the town was happy to have a lawyer as the regent.
In his acceptance speech, the regent said he was humbled by his selection and promised to ensure the quick selection and coronation of a new monarch.
