Actual cause of the crash is unknown, however, it was reported that the co-pilot Sergei Trukachev raised concerns to his family before takeoff that the technical condition of the aircraft left much to be desired. To that, authorites revealed that the crashed airliner had received a certificate on airworthiness, according to regulators in Ireland where the plane was registered,  earlier in 2015.
