Ireland Joins In The Combat Against Domestic Violence & Violence Against Women!

The campaign against domestic violence and violence aganst women got a boost when Ireland on Thursday, November 5th, signed the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, otherwise known as the Istanbul Convention.


Ambassador Peter Gunning, Permanent Representative of Ireland to the Council of Europe signed the Convention on behalf of Ireland at the Council of Europe Offices in Strasbourg - France.

The Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence which is a major step towards successfully combating violence against women and domestic violence in Europe was adopted by the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers in May 2011 in Istanbul, it is expected to come into force when it has been ratified by ten countries. 

Amnesty International had in the past, urged Ireland to sign the Convention, a move necessary to ensure its swift ratification.
