NUT calls for review of education funding in Nigeria!

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Lagos State Wing, on Thursday called for the review of the constitution as it affects the funding of basic education in the country.

The state chairman Mr Segun Raheem, said that adequate funding and implementation of the 26 per cent of UNESCO recommendation would guarantee free, compulsory and qualitative nine years schooling.

Reacting to upholding the right of a child to education Raheem told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), that the nine years schooling, which involves six years in primary school and three years in junior secondary, should be accessible.

“Teachers salaries and allowances and the cost of running schools should be made a point of first charge in the federation account,” he said.

He advised that there should be thorough and adequate financial supervision of such fund to avoid waste and mismanagement.

He urged the Federal Ministry of Education to call quarterly stakeholders meeting where challenges facing the education sector should be discussed.

“All agencies particularly UBEC quality assurance, inspectorate and statistics departments at all level should function independently.

“Also all local governments should be involved in infrastructure development, with effective implementation of all this recommendation, the right to education by Nigerian child would be guaranteed,” he said.
